Chicago Breaks More Mild Winter Records

Maybe it’s global warming, maybe it’s space weather. Regardless, more winter weather records are falling in Chicago.

Today marks the 320th consecutive day without an inch of recorded snow on the ground, breaking a record set in 1944. Through Wednesday the official snowfall total for Winter 2012-13 is a cumulative 1.3 inches, tying it with 1889-90 for lowest snowfall total to start a winter. As we mentioned Monday, this is great for not seeing trash as a place marker for parking spots; not so good in the near future for area farms.

Of greater concern (or cause for celebration, if you will) is the mercury reading. Right now Accuweather pegs the temperature at 51 degrees, well above their forecast high of 45 and Skilling Central's prediction of 47. Screw the groundhog looking for his shadow: we’re in the midst of spring-like weather for the second consecutive January.

It will turn colder by Sunday but clouds and rain are expected to roll in late Thursday to drench us through the weekend.
