volcano! To Take Hiatus After 'Farewell' Show
By Sarah Cobarrubias in Arts & Entertainment on Jan 9, 2013 3:40PM
Life was all rainbows and giggles when volcano! returned from hiatus last year. These sharply dressed specimens of convulsive and clever art rock had been on a four-year break when they dropped a new single followed by their third full-length album, both titled Piñata. But, it’s just our luck that the band is again going on hiatus, though an expectedly much shorter one.
The reason for the break is that Mark Cartwright (synth) hates America and is leaving for an extended trip to London. His bandmates are sending him off right with a show tomorrow night at the Burlington, which they say may be their last of 2013. Oh, and now that the band is beginning a long-distance relationship, they’ll be soliciting advice during their set, like:
What is the appropriate communication cadence to stay relevant in each other's lives without being overbearing? How do we set expectations now if we want to use this opportunity to play in other bands? How do you sexy skype?
If you can’t wait until tomorrow night, you can sample or buy Piñata over at their Bandcamp page. And if you’re a subscriber to either of these services, they’re also featured on this week’s Chicago Mixtape and a December Daytrotter session.
volcano! plays Thursday, January 10 at the Burlington, 3425 W Fullerton, 9 p.m., $7, 21+
