Back in September, Tankboy and I were discussing the endless cycle of breakups and reunions, and it went like this—

Sam: I haven't believed a band's "retirement" or "break-up" since Phish.
Tankboy: No one ever stays broken up. Except maybe The Replacements. And The Kinks.

A week later...

Rolling Stone reports, The Replacements Reunite for Covers EP
Sam: IT'S OFFICIAL: No one ever stays broken up.

We're pretty okay with that fact. Bidding starts today on Songs for Slim, a 10" vinyl EP of covers to benefit former Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap, who suffered a massive stroke in February 2012. Only 250 EPs are being made. They are calling this the first Replacements release since All Shook Down in 1990, although it's not clear if drummer Chris Mars actually performed alongside Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson. Mars did contribute cover art and a solo version of a Dunlap tune.

The Replacements broke up on July 4, 1991 during a concert at the Taste of Chicago. Read our piece marking the 20th anniversary of the public farewell.

Since you apparently can't watch music videos on television anymore, we'll showcase one here daily. There's no rhyme or reason, time or season, to which video we'll choose. Have a suggestion? Contact Samantha Abernethy at samantha@chicagoist.com
