In addition to providing coverage of stories regarding poverty, social justice and racial issues not found in the daily (or even weekly) newspapers, the latest issue of the Chicago Reporter serves as a look back at its mission since the late John McDermott founded the magazine in 1972. McDermott served as editor and publisher of the Reporter from its founding until 1985 and the magazine won over 30 journalism awards during his stewardship. (McDermott passed away in 1996 after a long battle with leukemia.)

The Chicago Reporter staff celebrates the release of the new issue, the past 40 years and the continuation of its mission—interim publisher Laura Washington writes in her publisher's note that there are "new questions and complexities to confront" regarding race and poverty in 2013—with a launch party at M Lounge from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. tonight. It's the start of a year-long series of events where the Reporter celebrates its 40th anniversary, once worth celebrating.

(Chicagoist will post an interview with Washington and Chicago Reporter interim editor Rui Kaneya Friday.)

M Lounge is located at 1520 S. Wabash Avenue.
