A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed outside a basketball game between Simeon and Morgan Park high schools on Wednesday night.
Tyrone Lawson was shot multiple times around 9:20 p.m. in a parking lot at Chicago State University, which for more than three years often hosts Chicago Public Schools athletic events to provide a "neutral setting." A CSU spokesperson said this is the first violent incident on the CSU campus.
Authorities have arrested two people in connection to the shooting, and a weapon has been recovered.
According to the Tribune, a fight had broken out between players of both teams during the handshake line at the end of the game. CPS security broke it up, but it spilled into the parking lot. The reason for the argument was not clear.
An aunt told WGN-TV that Lawson was an honor student at Morgan Park.
