The Chicago Jazz Festival is moving to Millennium Park this year. the festival's opening night has been in Pritzker Pavilion in recent years before shifting to Grant Park for the remainder of the festival. Tribune arts critic Howard Reich reports that secondary stage concerts will be held in Millennium Park's Chase Promenade, north and south of the Cloud Gate sculpture, with extra performances planned for the Harris Theater rooftop and elsewhere in the park.

The artist in residence for this year's festival will be Hamid Drake. One of the greatest jazz drummers Chicago has ever produced, Drake is best known for his long association with the late saxophonist Fred Anderson and played in Anderson's band in the inaugural Jazz Fest in 1979. Drake has also played the annual Winter Solstice concerts at Links Hall with fellow percussionist Michael Zerang for over 20 years.
