This week on stage brings us fun in the form of singing showgirls and a classic French play that you’ll be contemplating long after curtain call.

Born Yesterday

A corrupt businessman, bottle-blonde showgirl and good-hearted journalist — Born Yesterday sounds like a mash-up of several musicals we’ve seen before. But what can we say, we’re suckers for a story from a bygone era with timeless themes of love and self-exploration. The show runs through Sunday, Feb. 3.

Prairie Lakes Community Center Theater, 515 E. Thacker St., Des Plaines, 847-604-0275 or online.

Waiting for Godot

Samuel Beckett’s absurdist play shows the suffering of two homeless men waiting for the mysterious Godot. How they pass the time — talking, arguing, contemplating suicide — only serves to further the mystery. But don’t worry — half the fun of the play is mulling over the myriad interpretations over post-show drinks. The show runs Saturday, Jan. 19, Monday, Jan. 21 and Monday, Jan. 28 only.

Zoo Studio, 4001 N. Ravenswood, Ste. 205, 866-593-4614 or online.

Sweet Charity

Writers’ Theatre is currently basking in the glow of the brilliant play The Letters, so we’re anxious to see how they translate this showy musical that follows the travails of the 1960s dance hall hostess Charity Valentine. The show runs from Tuesday, Jan. 22 to Sunday, March 31.

Writers’ Theatre, 325 Tudor Ct., Glencoe, 847-242-6000 or online.
