LAST MINUTE PLANS: Jaill At Beat Kitchen

Jaill’s casual, garage-pop stylings give off the impression that they spend a lot of time smoking weed and drinking out of red Solo cups. But the trio, based in Milwaukee, can’t be labeled slackers—they’ve been doing their thing for about a decade, crafting their guitar-pop sound in dank basements, in little-known venues, and then for the past few years as part of the Sub Pop family.

You may remember the band from before they added the extra ‘L’ to the end of their name; who knew another band would already hold the name Jail? While the new, Sub-Pop-inducted Jaill is noticeably cleaner, less loose and jangly—like in their Summer 2012 album Traps—they still maintain those subtle hints of psych that we’ve grown so fond of.

The band is making the trip to Chicago tonight to perform the Beat Kitchen. Also playing tonight’s show will be local garage-pop acts Slushy and The Bingers. For now, here’s a video of Jaill’s “House With Haunting” off Traps:

Jaill plays tonight, Friday, Feb. 8 at the Beat Kitchen, 2100 W Belmont, 9:30 p.m., $10, 17+
