Bad news for aspiring Chicago Marathon entrants: race officials won’t say when registration for this year’s race will resume while race officials and partner ACTIVE Network work to discover the cause of the problem that led to Tuesday’s suspension.
Race director Carey Pinkowski released a statement Wednesday evening apologizing for the inconvenience and noted that 30,000 runner managed to sign up for the race. ACTIVE Network, meanwhile, said they’re working to refund any duplicate charges some registrants may have experienced and that runners who successfully signed up for the race can confirm their registrations at the Chicago Marathon registration page.
The good news here is there are still 15,000 open slots remaining when registration does re-open. Pinkowski said there will be ample notice when registration resumes and another update will be provided 5 p.m. CST Tuesday.
We’ve included the statements from Pinkowski and ACTIVE Network below.
Statement from Carey Pinkowski, Bank of America Chicago Marathon:
We are incredibly sorry that runners interested in signing up for the 2013 Bank of America Chicago Marathon experienced such difficulties today. We have been working nonstop with our registration provider to find the root of the problem and a solution. Many runners were able to sign up before the registration process was suspended. There are currently 15,000 entries remaining. Before we re-open registration, we need to make sure all technical issues are permanently resolved. We will provide ample notice regarding when the registration process will re-open. We sincerely appreciate the enthusiasm and support for the event.
We do not plan on reopening registration within the next two days. We will provide another update on registration by 5 p.m. CST on Thursday.
Statement from Active.com:
Today, ACTIVE Network experienced technology system issues with registration for the 2013 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. For this, all of us at ACTIVE sincerely apologize. Together, with Chicago Marathon we have suspended registration until these issues are resolved.
For those who were able to successfully complete the registration process, you can confirm your registration by visiting the Chicago Marathon registration page. Some runners are not sure if they are officially registered for the event and others may see duplicate charges on their credit card. For those that were charged more than once, ACTIVE is the process of refunding any duplicate charges. ACTIVE will notify these participants of the amount refunded.
At ACTIVE, our mission is to connect people with the activities they love and we didn’t deliver on that promise today. We apologize to the Chicago Marathon and to all runners. The entire ACTIVE team is working tirelessly to ensure that we remedy all of the errors.
