The Emanuel administration said it isn’t interested in bidding on the 2024 Summer Olympics, which should come as a relief to all Chicagoans who don’t stand to profit from the games coming to the city.
The city’s response came after the U.S. Olympic Committee sent a letter to the mayors of 35 cities to gauge potential interest in hosting the Games. USOC CEO Scott Blackmun said in the letter:
"Our objective in this process is to identify a partner city that can work with us to present a compelling bid to the IOC and that has the right alignment of political, business and community leadership.”
Emanuel spokeswoman Kate Hamilton said, “Our position remains the same - we are not bidding.” Chicago was thought to have the inside track to hosting the 2016 Summer Games before the International Olympic Committee showed former Mayor Richard M. Daley and the Chicago 2016 Olympic Committee how to really wheel and deal. We still get a kick out of how the crowd in Daley Plaza reacted to the announcement Chicago was the first finalist eliminated by the IOC.
Damn, that will never get old
