Melancholia rules the stage this week — and we couldn’t be happier about it.

Everything is Illuminated

Jonathan Safran Foer’s comically dark novel turned movie is now… you guessed it, a play. Don’t miss the stage debut of a young wanderer in search of his roots, accompanied by his cantankerous grandfather and an amorous dog. The show runs through Sunday, March 31.

Next Theatre Company, Noyes Cultural Arts Center, 927 Noyes St., Evanston, 847-475-1875 or online.

Never the Bridesmaid

Playwright Bill Jepsen packed the house for Chicago Dramatists with Cadillac a few years ago, so we’re excited to see his newest work about two love-lorn siblings begrudgingly celebrating their parents’ 40th anniversary. The show runs through Sunday, April 7.

Polarity Ensemble Theatre, 1500 N. Bell St., 800-838-3006 or online.

The Dream of the Burning Boy

Bring the tissues to the Profiles’ newest production, which revolves around a high school teacher trying to recuperate from the loss of his favorite student. The show runs through Sunday, April 14.

Profiles Theatre Alley Stage, 4147 N. Broadway, 773-549-1815 or online.
