Warm Up With Some Jamaican Oldies At Mayne Stage Tonight

By Chuck Sudo in Arts & Entertainment on Mar 2, 2013 4:00PM

Local DJ and producer Chuck Wren has put together an amazing lineup at Mayne Stage tonight as part of his regular “Jamaican Oldies Weekend:” An appearance by the legendary singing duo of Roy Panton and Yvonne Harrison.

Panton has been singing since the 1950s and by the 1960s was performing with Stranger Cole and Eric “Monty” Morris. Panton’s biggest accomplishments as a singer were as a duettist, particularly the songs he recorded with Yvonne Harrison under the name “Roy & Yvonne.” Panton and Harrison recorded a string of ska and rocksteady singles; the most popular, “Two Roads Before You” being their biggest hit.

Panton and Harrison play Mayne Stage 8 p.m. tonight, backed by Minneapolis ska band The Prizefighters. Wren will spin ska, rocksteady, reggae and other sounds from the islands between sets, and The Prizefighters are also on the bill. Purchase tickets online here.
