Chicago is 176 years old today. At least technically, since the city was incorporated in 1837, though there have been people living in this perfect spot by the lake for a long time. In any case, it's an excuse for some civic pride and a drink.
This cocktail, called "Paris on the Prairie" (a phrase from the 1909 Plan of Chicago that created the lakefront park) was created by the mixers at The Monkey's Paw on Southport. It's a perfect mix of local ingredients, including Koval whiskey and Malort, with a French twist. Mix one up and lift a glass to our wonderful city, or head to The Monkey's Paw for a professional version of the drink starting tonight.
Paris on the Prairie
3 oz. Koval 47th Ward Whiskey
1 oz. St. Germaine
1/2 oz. Malört
A Dash Grapefruit Bitters
Combine all ingredients in a tin over ice. Stir until well chilled. Strain into a martini glass and serve with a grapefruit twist.
The Monkey's Paw is located at 2524 N Southport Avenue.
