Eight school buses that were stolen overnight have been reduced to a two-story-high pile of scrap. The Sunrise bus company found the lock to their lot on the Far South Side snapped, and authorities tracked the buses' GPS signals to a location on the West Side.
"We expected to come in and see our buses, not a mound of scrap," said Greg Bonnett, president and co-owner of Sunrise. "In 40 years I have never heard of anything like this."
According to the Tribune, several people ran into a building when officers arrived at the lot. One person was arrested at the scene, and three others, including the owner of the lot, were taken into custody later.
Bonnett estimates his loss at $250,000. Four of the buses were wheelchair-accessible, making them more valuable. As scrap, CBS estimates their worth at $15,000.
