Chicagoist Weekend Theater: The South Side Irish

The history of Beverly's South Side Irish Parade by now well known to most Chicagoans. But did you know the South Side had its own Irish parade long before those residents in Beverly banded together in 1979?

The city's official St. Patrick's Day Parade used to be located on 79th Street in Auburn Gresham until 1960, when Mayor Richard J. Daley moved it to a more centralized location downtown (although white flight on the South Side may also have been a factor.)

Here's video combining photos of the 1958 parade with Arranmore's now-iconic musical tribute to the South Side Irish.
