Chicago's SHAPERS have been mostly quiet for a while. Oddly quiet, so we suspected they were up to something, and it's turns out our suspicions were right. The group has been hard at work on a new double album, and while there's no release date, they're ready to give us a listen of the direction they're heading.
We're always tickled by the directions SHAPERS has taken, and doubly so considering the group's roots as the orch-poppers May Or May Not oh so many years ago. But the band has long abandoned those days. Or have they? While SHAPERS have always eschewed solid structure in their songs, there is, at the heart, always a trace of that DNA with an ear towards the pop. Often it's deeply buried, but it's there.
Their latest song is "Kennyy (The Second Second of Forever)" and it may or may not be on the new album.
SHAPERS play Saturday, March 23, at Hideout, 1354 W Wabansia, 9 p.m., $8, 21+
