Monday Afternoon Diversion: What Happens Inside A School Slated To Be Closed

The news last week that Mayor Rahm Emanuel's school board is planning to shutter 52 public elementary schools across the city provoked reactions of anger and outrage, along with a debate over whether or not the city can afford to maintain schools in all of Chicago's neighborhoods. Decidedly absent from this debate is a real look at what some of the programs and students in neighborhood schools that are slated to be closed look like.
Here is a video of the String Orchestra Celebration Concert at Lafayette Elementary, featuring the Advanced Orchestra joined by alumni and guests, the Advanced and Intermediate Orchestras combined and the Advanced and Intermediate joined by beginners. Lafayette will be closed into Chopin Elementary.
