Lila Downs' appearance has changed over the years from a Frida Kahlo lookalike to a sultry ranchera goddess, but her music has remained the same. Her music incorporates elements of Mixtec, Zapotec, Maya and Nahuatl cultures, filtered through the mind of an anthropologist (she studied the subject at the University of Minnesota) and the soul of a woman unashamed of her indigenous heritage. Downs brings her band to Chicago for a March 30 show at the Congress Theater, in a classic case where the artist trumps the venue. Purchase tickets here.
