See All 149 Rocks On Tribune Tower Facade

By Amy Cavanaugh in Arts & Entertainment on Apr 4, 2013 4:20PM

The Tribune Tower is one of the most beautiful buildings in Chicago, but the coolest thing about it isn't the spires and flying buttresses—it's the 149 rocks from famous places around the world that are studded on the Tower's facade. Recently, The Chicago Architecture Blog responded to a request from a reader looking for images of all the rocks by posting pictures of each one.

The blog catalogued the rocks in May 2009, and since new rocks are added very rarely, the tower probably hasn't added much since the rock census turned up 149 rocks (though they did plan to swap out a lunar rock). Here are a couple highlights:

• A rock from the U.S. Navy's 1947 expedition to Antarctica.

• A rock from Edinburgh Castle.

A cannonball from Pevensy Castle in England.

• A piece of petrified wood from Arizona's Petrified Forest.

• A stone from a New Jersey Revolutionary War battlefield.

Check them all out here.
