From London street urchins to a family from the deep South, there's plenty of variety on Chicago stages this week.
Head of Passes
Tarell Alvin McCraney, a Steppenwolf ensemble member and playwright of The Brother/Sister Plays, is returning with a story of faith, loss and ghosts of the past in a family drama set in the Mississippi marshlands. The show runs through Sunday, June 9.
Steppenwolf Theatre, 1650 W. Halsted, 312-335-1650 or online.
In a Garden
The Chicago premiere of playwright Howard Korder’s resonant three-person play, set in a fictitious Middle Eastern country, is part politics play, part aesthetic exploration. The show runs through Sunday, May 19.
Red Orchid Theatre, 1531 N. Wells, 312-943-8722 or online.
Oliver
The star of the show might be the lovable street urchin Oliver Twist, but our money’s on up-and-coming Chicago actress Heidi Kettenring, who’s performance should be well-worth the trek to the ‘burbs. The show plays through Sunday, June 2.
Drury Lane Theatre, 100 Drury Ln., Oakbrook Terrace, 630-530-0111 or online.
