Chicago River Bridge Raising Starts

Heads up, Chicago—it's time to scramble to find a friend/neighbor/co-worker/acquaintance who owns a boat that you can relax on all summer. Today marks the first day that the 27 bridges on the South Branch of the Chicago River will be raised sequentially every eight to 12 minutes to allow recreational boats to get to the docks. The first bridge was raised this morning at 8 a.m. and bridge liftings will continue Saturday and Wednesday mornings until June 29.
But if you're among the boat-owners, take note: the bridges won't be lifted from April 26 through May 5 because construction will be taking place on the Wells Street Bridge project.
