The story of Petunia, a pregnant pit bull who was found with burns over 25 percent of her body two weeks ago, ended sadly when she died Sunday. Petunia was being cared for the past two weeks by It’s a Pittie Rescue in Monee after an animal shelter brought the dog to their attention.

Petunia was set on fire and run over by a car. In addition to her burns, she suffered fractured teeth and internal injuries. It’s a Pittie had to wait 24 hours to have her transferred to their care and the group set up a page gathering donations for her medical care, as well as a Facebook page to monitor her progress.

Complicating matters is It’s a Pittie doesn’t have an actual brick and mortar location. The group pays for the freight and transport for the dogs they rescue, then find foster homes for them before they’re placed in permanent homes. The injuries sustained by Petunia were severe enough that she required constant care, or else infection would set in. There was also concern Petunia would lack the strength to care for her pups after she gave birth to them.

Petunia gave birth to a litter of pups a week ago. They’re currently being bottle fed and should be available for adoption in 10 weeks through It’s a Pittie.
