Pencil This In: Celebrate Henry Darger's Birthday at Intuit
By Chuck Sudo in Arts & Entertainment on Apr 12, 2013 5:20PM
Henry Darger is one of the most celebrated examples of outsider art and arguably one of the most important artists in Chicago's history. Darger spent most of his life writing, drawing and painting in a one room apartment on Webster Place and worked as a custodian, but it wasn't until shortly before his death in 1973 that his talents were discovered by his landlords, who recognized the merits and importance of his work. Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, has most of the contents of Darger's living space as part of their permanent display and they're celebrating Darger's birthday with a soiree tonight from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. featuring music, beer from Revolution Brewing and a silent auction of rare Darger memorabilia. Proceeds from the event will go to maintain the Darger collection. (756 N. Milwaukee Ave.; $10, $8 for Intuit members.)
