Chicagoist Weekend Theater: Remembering Jimmy Dawkins

Chicago lost another blues icon last week with the death of guitarist Jimmy Dawkins. The Mississippi native taught himself to play guitar and eventually became an in-demand sideman for the likes of Otis Rush and Buddy Guy before breaking out on his own with a series of acclaimed albums on Delmark Records. Dawkins became associated with the city's "West Side" blues sound, a more laid back style rooted in the genre's Mississippi roots

Dawkins eventually formed his own label and promoted artists like singer Tail Dragger, who's part of the video we selected below. Dawkins also wrote a column for Living Blues magazine.
