Pencil This In: CHIRP Radio's 'The First Time' Moves To UP; 'Thursday Night Throwdown' At Metropolis Coffee

CHIRP Radio's "The First Time" reading series celebrates its third anniversary with a move to UP Comedy Club! April 17. The theme for this reading is "The First Crime" and will feature stories from Kelly Hogan, JC Brooks and Dmitry Samarov, among others. Music will be provided by "The First Time Three" of Steve Frisbie, Liam Davis, and Gerald Dowd. Tickets ($10) are available at the Up Comedy Club website. All proceeds benefit CHIRP Radio. (230 W. Coffee
"Thursday Night Throwdown" is a monthly event sponsored by New Gotham Coffee Community, bringing together area baristas for networking, socializing, and latte art competition. This month New Gotham joins forces with Washington, DC-based DMV Coffee to create an interstate barista competition April 18 at Metropolis Coffee Company. Chicago baristas will gather at Metropolis Coffee Company and DC baristas at The Coffee Bar. Baristas from the two cities will compete in latte art production and be judged by coffee professionals via live-feed projection. Art by DC baristas will be projected on the wall of Metropolis Café for audience viewing. The winning barista takes home the buy-in pool. (1039 W. Granville Ave., 7:30 p.m. - 10 p.m., $5 buy-in and registration.)
