A play chronicling time spent in a military prison balances out the bathroom humor this week on the Chicago stage.

The Brig

Former marine Kenneth H. Brown’s intense, award-winning play is based on his brutal 30-day stay in a military prison, also known as a brig. Wimps be warned — this highly physical play is both shocking and honest. The show runs through Sunday, May 26.

Mary-Arrchie Theatre Company at Angel Island, 735 W. Sheridan, 773-871-0442 or online.

Spamalot

Okay, so you know all the infamous lines from the Monty Python movie, but the stage version is hilarious in its own right. All the same gags, just add in a reworked ending, a few extra songs and copious amounts of irreverent jazz hands. The show runs through Saturday, May 4.

Jedlicka Performing Arts Center, 3801 S. Central Ave., Cicero, 708-656-1800 or online.

Pal Joey

Joey, a smarmy wannabe business man, isn’t your typical musical theater hero — and that’s what we like about him. Throw in a few classic Rodgers and Hart songs and some jazzy dialogue, and we’re in. The show runs through Sunday, May 26.

Porchlight Music Theatre, Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont, 773-327-5252 or online.
