You Wanna Feel All Pretty & Nice, Dontcha?

Pretty & Nice caught our attention late last year with their Us You All We EP. The Boston quartet immediately made us think of a peppier version of The Shins, weird sing-along art poppers, thrashing punk rock and elegiacal harmonies that cause the clouds to go technicolor on you. And that was all in the first track, "Hibernate."
Their forthcoming album Golden Rules for Golden People continues in that restless vein. The songs are connected with a confident sense of melody and sure purpose, but these four guys take those core tenets and throw whatever sounds around that structure they see fit. It seems to be an East Coast thing, and Boston in particular, but it's that sort of complicated power pop that verges on brainy and silly but just ends up being simply joyous. It's good for the soul music. And you know what? After the week we—and we're certain the band—have had, don't we deserve a little sunshine in our music?
The band is in town tonight to play Township, so we're curious to see if they can pull all this off in person. We're betting the odds are in their favor.
Pretty & Nice play tonight April 21, at Township, 2202 N California, 8 p.m., $5, 18+
