World Dance Day is back at the Athenaeum Theatre this Sunday for the annual celebration of the wide range of disciplines from around the globe. Going strong since its introduction in 1982, this year’s tribute features more than 20 different troupes with styles ranging from contemporary, hip hop, and ballroom to more exotic Bulgarian, Indian and Albanian.
Sunday’s show is a unique opportunity to see dancers from Chicago Dance Crash, Nomi Dance Company and the Joffrey Ballet share the stage with companies like Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theater and Dukati and Biseri Folklore Ensemble. This year also features a “Teach-In” with free mini-dance lessons before the main event for dancers of all ages and abilities to learn from some of the day’s top choreographers and dancers. Lessons are at noon, and the performance begins at 2pm. Tickets are $28 ($16 for seniors and students).
Athenaeum Theatre is at 2936 N. Southport Ave.
