Food

Barcito's ongoing "Amigos de Pinxtos" series gets a boost of chef star power tonight. Paul Kahan (Blackbird, Big Star, The Publican) and Matthias Merges (Yusho, Billy Sunday) are the guest chefs and they'll not only be pairing all-you-can-eat small plates for $25 per person, they'll be crafting the music playlist, as well. All proceeds go to Pilot Light, a collective of chiefs working with public schools to enhance a child's perception of food through interpersonal implementation of food education programs. (151 W. Erie, 8 p.m. - 10 p.m.)

Film

Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot picked a hell of a film for their "Sound Opinions Goes to the Movies" 7:30 p.m. May 1 at the Music Box Theatre. Wattstax, the film account of the festival Stax Records organized in 1972 to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the Watts riots, is better known these days for the powerful performances by Isaac Hayes, The Staples Singers, The Bar-Kays and Rev. Jesse Jackson rocking a fierce natural and a dashiki. Yet it also gives viewers a stark, unblinking look at the streets of Watts and interviews with local African Americans. Buy your tickets here. (3733 N. Southport Ave.)
