Chappo's full-length debut surprised us with its range and immediately endeared the band to us beyond their appearance soundtracking an iPod commercial. Instead we were exposed to a band with a grasp of musical history that they were unafraid to weave in and out of their songs. The material was more aggressive than we expected, and the group shows a penchant for playing with sonics to push their songs into an area bordering psych without ever devolving into pure freak-out.
Chappo is on the road right now—appearing at Schubas on May 3—still promoting their debut, Moonwater, but they've also released a free EP of covers, Nothin' To Sell You, as an extra treat for fans new and old. Of the four tracks, we enjoy their version of Beck's "Cyanide Breath Mint" since it brings out the best attributes of the band—solid tunefulness mixed with adventurous bravado—most naturally.
Like that? Listen to the whole EP of covers and download the ones you like (or the whole thing)!
Chappo plays May 3 at Schubas, 3159 N Southport, 10 p.m., $12, 18+
