Youngblood Hawke's Soaring Dance Rock Comes In For A Landing

By Tankboy in Arts & Entertainment on May 6, 2013 4:00PM

File Youngblood Hawke under that recent spate of bands that seem to have been raised on a steady diet of dance music and pop melodies pushed forward by group vocals reaching for the happiest reaches of the universe. Their music is wide-eyed and wondering, and one can just see their inner kids trying to burst out of the seams of each composition. Hell, their first single "We Come Running" dispenses with even trying to simply evoke that feeling and goes straight to the employ of a children's choir to make the point blatantly obvious.

We've been listening to the band's full length debut for the last week and admit that if you take the whole thing in during a single sitting it can grow a little overwhelming; it can begin to feel like a sunshine steamroller. So don't listen to it while sitting. This is music you need to move to, allowing its energy to fuel you. Based on that we can see why the group is already garnering a reputation for being an incredibly fun live band. This is music meant to be experienced, not dissected. Luckily for you there's a chance to experience them this week when they come through town. Here's a taste of what you can expect.

Youngblood Hawke performs Tuesday, May 7 at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N Lincoln, 8 p.m., $15, 18+
