APPetizing: So You Think You Know Your Cocktails?
By Anthony Todd in Food on May 13, 2013 4:40PM
We fancy ourselves cocktail experts here at Chicagoist, but how can you really tell? Gossiping with other cocktail geeks over drinks tends to get a little less than precise as the evening goes on, and our non-cocktailing friends are pretty easily bluffed. We needed something to prove our mettle - or just to have a good time. Enter Cocktail Challenge.
This new app (released last week for iOS) is a trivia game about all things booze. Do you know what the base spirit is in a Corpse Reviver #2? What the ingredients are in a champagne cocktail? Who wrote the Savoy Cocktail Book? Those are all questions in the first round out of 18 rounds in the game. Get enough points and move onto speed rounds. There are even pictures — can you identify glassware by sight?
The app isn't perfect yet — it randomizes the incorrect answers to make repeat play fun, but accidentally insisted that a martini included simple syrup — but it's definitely worth downloading. The first few rounds are free, and if you want access to all the rounds, you have to pay a small fee. We suspect more rounds will be coming in future updates, since there are six full sets of questions on gin but none on vodka, whiskey, tequila or mixers.
Our favorite part? Hidden behind a tiny button on the main screen are recipes for a huge number of classic cocktails mentioned in the app. This is perfect for when your taste buds are whetted by a trivia question; If you want to actually make that corpse reviver #2, now you can. The recipe section is included with the free app.
Download the app through the iTunes store.
