It's a week of quirky yet emotionally dense plays this week on the Chicago stage.

Brighton Beach Memoirs

Neil Simon’s classic play chronicling his memories from growing up in pre-WWII Brooklyn is receiving accolades for its talented cast and enduringly funny script — we’re ready to see what all the buzz is about. The show runs through Saturday, June 29.

Raven Theatre, 6157 N. Clark, 773-338-2177 or online.

The Internationalist

Playwright Anne Washburn’s clever and beguiling play about a lost-in-translation business trip is far from conventional. You’re in for a few nonsensical scenes, exaggerated plot lines, even a made-up language. Consider us intrigued. The show runs Tuesday, May 28 through Sunday, June 16.

Steppenwolf Theatre, 1650 N. Halsted, 312-335-1650 or online.

Smudge

Part dark comedy, part horror story, Smudge is a terrifyingly amusing look at new parenthood and the unexpected outcomes that result. While the subject matter isn’t for the faint of heart, we’re looking forward to what former Daily Show writer Rachel Axler does with the weightier topic of troubled parenthood. The show runs Saturday, May 25 through Sunday, June 23.

Ka-Tet Theatre Company, Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport, 773-935-6875 or online.
