Almost a year ago, Gonzo Chicago helped produce a unique experiment for Chicago's music scene, which they called the Chicago Sonic Coalition. The concept was simple: more than 60 musicians from a wide range of genres threw their names into a hat. Those names were pulled at random to form 17 new bands. Ultimately, members of Heavy Times, Running, ONO, and Bad Drugs participated. Some groups ended up dropping out, as Gonzo Chicago's John Yingling explains in Impose Magazine, but on the whole, the evening appeared to be a wild success.

As Yingling writes:

The energy and vibe in the room was something I haven't seen in a long time, and something I have not seen since. It brought the community together. Though logistically a mess, it ran extremely smooth...The whole night was a testament to the burgeoning Chicago underground scene.

Now, you can watch video of the thing for yourself. Here's hoping for a 2013 edition.
