The Supermoon Is Coming! The Brightest Full Moon Of The Year Appears Overnight

By Amy Cavanaugh in News on Jun 22, 2013 9:00PM

A supermoon will be in the sky as the full moon will be the biggest and brightest of the year early on Sunday.

According to National Geographic, "the moon will be at its closest distance to Earth for 2013 while in its full phase. As a result, it will appear 8 percent larger and 17 percent brighter than usual—an event widely known as a supermoon."

The supermoon occurs when the moon is at its shortest distance from Earth (perigee) and tonight, the moon will be 356,991 kilometers (221,824 miles) versus its usual 364,000 kilometers.

Higher tides are forecast during supermoons, but there isn't expected to be too much of an effect.
