Cubs Designate Carlos Marmol For Assignment

The Cubs relationship with Carlos Marmol is coming to an inglorious end after the ballclub designated their former closer for assignment Tuesday. Marmol, who earns $9 million this season, was 2-4 with two saves and a 5.86 ERA in 31 relief appearances and lost his job to Kevin Gregg, who has saved all 11 of his save opportunities in 2013.
Once believed to be the closer of the future for the Cubs, Marmol's problems in the role and the size of his contract have made him unable to move via a trade for the past two seasons. The Cubs have 10 days to trade, release or waive him. He's expected to clear waivers and the team has called up outfielder Brian Bogusevic from Triple-A Iowa.
News of Marmol's waiver was only the beginning of housecleaning for the Cubs. They also granted Ian Stewart his release. Stewart was picked up by the Cubs last season and had a forgettable year. He was non-tendered after the season and picked back up by the club for a $2 million, one-year deal. Stewart, whose been in the minors all season, was suspended for 10 games earlier this month after going on a Twitter rant where he complained about his not being on the major league roster and asked for his release.
