Qdoba Mexican Grill announced the closing of 18 Chicago area stores by 3 p.m. Friday. The news, which the company announced on its Facebook page and Twitter feed, is part of a plan to close 67 mostly underperforming stores across the country.
Qdoba, which is owned by Jack in the Box Inc., still plans to open another 70-75 stores by the end of the year and 140 by the end of 2014. Qdoba president Tim Casey said in a statement, “By closing these locations and optimizing our company footprint, we can be more effective in focusing our advertising and marketing resources to support existing and planned restaurants in our core markets where we have high levels of brand awareness.”
The closings could also help some people from becoming confused by the nearly identical models of Qdoba and the larger Chipotle Mexican Grill.
