June 30 marks the 25th anniversary of Friends of the Parks’ L.A.T.E. (Long After Twilight Ends) Ride, one of Chicago's best bike rides. The 25-mile non-competitive ride winds through some of the city’s most popular neighborhoods before culminating with a trip along the Lakefront path, ending with a breakfast at Buckingham Fountain for those who opt for it.

Maria Dmyterko Stone, Director of Neighborhood Parks and Community Relations for Friends of the Parks, told Chicagoist registration is lagging slightly behind numbers from previous years and said people interested in participating this year can register until 12:59 a.m. June 30. “We have a lot of suburban riders come in for the ride, folks from out of state,” Dmyterko Stone said. “Many local businesses put together teams to participate.”

The route has changed in recent years but the highlight for many remains traveling along the lakefront path long after beachgoers, joggers and bicyclists have left the lakefront. Dmyterko Stone added many riders love biking through Greektown, where they receive cheers and words of encouragement from club-goers and businesses.

For folks interested in the post-ride breakfast Dmyterko Stone told Chicagoist 90 Miles Cuban CafĂ© will be handling the honors this year and riders will be greeted at the end of the ride by a string quartet. All proceeds from the L.A.T.E. Ride will benefit Friends of the Parks’ Chicago Plays! Program, a new initiative to build 35 children’s playgrounds in 2013 across the City of Chicago.

Register online through June 28 and save $2.
