A 5-year-old boy and his 31-year-old mother were found shot to death in their home in the Back of the Yards neighborhood early Friday morning after the woman's 11-year-old son alerted police.

The mother Chavonne Brown and her son Sterling Sims were discovered around 2:40 a.m. Friday. Family told CBS that the 11-year-old boy witnessed the shooting and "apparently knew who the gunman was, and was not shot only because the gun jammed."

The Tribune described a heartbreaking scene as the boys' great grandmother and grandmother approached police officers at the yellow brick apartment building asking, "Is my grandbaby alright?"

Sterling finished preschool two weeks ago. Brown babysat for a living.

Police say there is no evidence of a break-in, and they believe it is not a "random crime." No arrests have been made.
