Art/Discussion
"Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes" opens at the Museum of Contemporary Art June 29. The exhibit charts the evolution of the popular artist from his early days in Chicago writing and illustrating the seminal comic book Eightball to his current work. Clowes and Susan Miller, the curator of the exhibit, will discuss his practice, his connections to Chicago (Clowes grew up in Hyde Park and had his early professional beginnings in Wicker Park), and the beginnings of the exhibition. The talk begins at 1 p.m. June 29; tickets ($10, $8 MCA members, $6 students) are available online here.
Film
Chicago Filmmakers and Drinking and Writing Theater present the third annual Tied House Film Festival, a selection of new and original short films that investigate, extrapolate or involve on the six stages of intoxication: euphoria, excitement, confusion, stupor, coma and death. The films may not be about alcohol intoxication per se, but will explore the state of intoxication however personally defined. Visit our website to see the full line-up in late June. Selected filmmakers will be awarded a free growler of local craft beer from the Haymarket Pub and Brewery and audience award winning films will receive premier grand prizes from local businesses. The festival will take place 8 p.m. tonight at Chicago Filmmakers (5243 N. Clark St., 773-293-1447, $8 suggested donation) and 4 p.m. June 29 at the Drinking and Writing Theater at Haymarket Pub & Brewery (737 W. Randolph St., Free)
