Readings
Want a taste of what author Irvine Welsh is working on next? Then head over to Public House Theatre (3914 N. Clark Street) tonight July 2 where he'll be a table reading from a work-in-progress called Creatives he's been co-writing with fellow Chicago author Don De Grazia. It's part of Public House Theatre's "Put 'Em Up" series featuring readings and panel discussions by established and new writers and literary industry insiders. Tickets are $7 and include a serving of Pabst Blue Ribbon, Buy tickets here.
Food and Beer
Brewery Ommegang presents "Hop Chef Chicago" 6-10 p.m. tonight at Paris Club (59 W. Hubbard Street). Some of Chicago's best chefs, including Cleetus Friedman of Fountainhead, Cosmo Goss of Publican Quality Meats, Tim Cottini of Fork, Jacob Saben of Graham Elliot Bistro, Alex Ageneau of Paris Club, Rick Gresh of David Burke's Primehouse and Craig Fass of The Bad Apple will compete in this judged competition pairing Ommegang ales with dishes they've prepared. The winning chef will then represent Chicago in a nation-wide cook-off at the brewery's annual Belgium Comes to Cooperstown beerfest in August. (Disclosure: I'll be one of the judges.) Tickets are available here.
