Chicago Dramatists' one-woman show The Burden of Not Having a Tail.

Take a break from fireworks and foot-longs for a couple suspenseful stage shows.

The Casuals

Step back to 1955 to explore the long-held secrets of a formerly beloved military radio host. Considering today’s reality of NSA mistrust and leaked information, The Casuals seems eerily timely. The show runs Sunday, July 7 through Sunday, July 28.

Jackalope Theatre Company at The Storefront Theater, 66 E. Randolph St., 773-340-2543 or online.

The Burden of Not Having a Tail

This one-woman show is part survival story, part reality TV as we’re introduced to an isolated extremist holed up in her underground bunker. Ticket-holders beware, you may be pulled up for a little onstage participation. The show runs through Sunday, August 4.

Sideshow Theatre Company at Chicago Dramatists, 1105 W. Chicago Ave., 773-809-4782 or online.

Simpatico

Playwright Sam Shepard’s take on the ugly realities of the horse-racing industry and two men who just can’t seem to stay out of it is a fast-paced, quasi detective story set to stage. Count us in. The show runs through Sunday, August 25.

Red Orchid Theatre, 1531 N. Wells St., 312-943-8722 or online.
