Pittsburgh 6, Cubs 2

The Pirates were locked in on Jeff Samardzija's fastball all day Friday at Wrigley Field. Samardzija allowed five runs over six innings and took the loss as the Pirates continued their surprisingly strong play. Cubs hitters could only muster four hits off Francisco Liriano, one of them a two-run homer by Scott Hairston in the second inning. The Pirates are a major league-best 53-32.

Tampa Bay 8, White Sox 3

The White Sox latest sign of surrendering the 2013 season happened Friday at Tropicana Field. The Sox called up catcher Josh Phegley from Triple-A Charlotte and Phegley contributed a hit and two RBIs to the cause. Phegley will see extended time as the Sox' backstop after posting a .316 batting average with 15 homers, 18 doubles and 41 RBIs for Charlotte and is confident he can call a game well. He better be sure, because Dylan Axelrod pitched a bowling shoe ugly game last night and allowed five runs over 1 1/3 innings. Next year is officially here, ladies and gentlemen.
