Plenty of laughs and gasps to be had this week on the Chicago stage.

Shrek the Musical

Everyone’s favorite gruff but loveable, formerly animated ogre is coming to the stage (minus Mike Myers). In a show where deep life lessons and bathroom humor collide, Shrek is for kiddos and the adults who bring them. The show runs Saturday, July 13 through Sunday, Sept. 1.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater, 800 E. Grand Ave., 312-595-5600 or online.

Death and Harry Houdini

The House Theatre has brought back its part magic show, part stage biography production of Death and Harry Houdini for an eight-week return engagement. And in the intimate venue, the audience is much closer to all the on-stage, nail-biting action. The show runs through Sunday, Aug. 11.

The Chopin Theatre, 1543 W. Division St., 773-769-3832 or online.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee may feature a few loveable, adolescent outcasts hoping to out-spell each other, but don’t let the name fool you. The show is full of clever quips, truly funny (and sometimes hilariously inappropriate) songs and even a little audience participation. The show runs through Sunday, August 18.
