Earlier this month The Wall Street Journal, in their inimitable way, called cargo bikes “the new station wagon.” And cargo bikes are becoming increasingly popular. Bike manufacturer Yuba has doubled the sales of their Mundo cargo bike brand every year since launching in 2006. With models starting at under $1,000, they’re sturdy, affordable and designed so riders can transport everything from groceries to couches to families with relative ease.

Readers and transit activists know Steven Vance is one of the most passionate and active proponents of bicycling as transport in Chicago. Vance is the force behind the Cargo Bike Roll Call, which takes place from noon until 7 p.m. July 27. This year’s event is being rolled into the annual Classic Car and Bike Show because Division Street will be closed from Western to California Avenues, which will provide a bigger area for people interested in cargo bikes to test ride one. The Cargo Bike Roll Call will take place at West Town Bikes (2459 W. Division St., near Campbell Street).
