Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Transit Authority announced Tuesday that absenteeism rates at the transit agency have declined by 22 percent over the past two years, when it was costing the CTA $40 million annually to staff extra workers due to the absenteeism rates.

Emanuel cited better management of the causes of absenteeism such as sick leave and injuries on the job, resulting in the CTA saving over $10 million in two years.

“City taxpayers deserve a government that’s accountable with measurable results,” said Mayor Emanuel. “We are setting higher standards and expectations for our employees across the board because taxpayers deserve an efficient, transparent government that is working hard to improve the city.”

Now you glass half-full types will note that CTA still spends $30 million a year on absenteeism. Don’t worry, they’re working on that, so they say.
