Family, Friends Say Farewell To Dennis Farina In Chicago

Family and friends of Dennis Farina gathered in a Chicago church to say farewell to the Chicago cop-turned-actor who died in Arizona last week at age 69. Mr. Farina had been battling lung cancer.

The funeral at Assumption Catholic Church in downtown Chicago (the first parish Mr. Farina's parents attended when they came to Chicago from Sicily) was a low-key affair with none of the major Hollywood stars Farina worked during his acting career, although fans of the actor were in attendance. Retired Chicago Police chaplain, Rev. Tom Nangle, said Mr. Farina, "never went Hollywood" and always remembered his Chicago roots.

“He always kept his Chicago way, in his way of speaking, and when it came to his behavior," Rev. Nangle said. He also spoke of Mr. Farina's 18 years as a Chicago cop. “He was a detective ... more than that, he was one of those rare types who could see around corners and see through walls.”

Mr. Farina's grandchildren served as pallbearers. He's survived by three sons, six grandchildren and his partner of 35 years, Marianne Cahill.
