Drowners are from New York but their debut 7" Between Us Girls was released in the U.K. and this makes perfect sense. Much like another certain NYC band from the early aughts who took England by storm before conquering America, Drowners' sound is tight, taut and packed with melodies that rush by so quickly you have to scramble to catch them. Their whole three song EP is over in under six minutes but don't mistake that brevity with anything approaching punk rock. The pace is frenetic but Drowners haven't a shred of shred of nihilistic aggression. Instead they charge along with songs that mix the melodious aspects of the Smiths with the quicker and more skeletal moments of Television.

Drowners were in town for Lollapalooza a few weeks ago but they're swinging back through tonight as a headlining act in the kind of place you should really see pretty much any band; a small, dark club with the volume turned up loud. If you're a fan of Britpop, classic rock, punk rock, pop or just feel like dancing your ass off, then you'll probably want to catch Drowners at Schubas tonight.

Drowners play tonight, Aug. 13, at Schubas, 3159 N Southport, 8 p.m., $10, 21+
