Gov. Pat Quinn vetoed a move by the Illinois Legislature to cut by half the number of days the state’s museums and aquariums offered free admission to state residents. In doing so, Quinn said he was concerned for the ability of low-income families to visit the cultural institutions.

“Many Illinois families can only visit these museums on the 52 days that they are currently open to residents free of charge,”Quinn wrote in a letter to lawmakers explaining his veto. Quinn later told reporters, "I think you should make these special places, these museums, they're world renowned, as available as possible."

The bill would have cut the number of free days at Illinois museums and aquariums to 26 and Quinn’s veto may not amount to much. The bill passed by wide margins in both the House and Senate to override the veto.
