Groupon Endorses Marriage Equality In Illinois

By Chuck Sudo in News on Aug 20, 2013 1:30PM

The dysfunctional political climate in Springfield prevented marriage equality from becoming law in Illinois during the spring legislative session but that hasn’t stopped proponents of same-sex marriage from working toward that goal.

Groupon is using its influence to help make marriage equality a reality in Illinois. Last week the daily deal pioneer released a video expressing its support for same-sex marriage, featuring gay and lesbian employees and their supporters sharing stories of commitment and the legal complications of their unions not being recognized in other states.

At Groupon, LGBT employees are included in the company’s non-discrimination policy. Employment benefits are provided to same-sex partners. The company is also working with a coalition of businesses to round up support for marriage equality in Illinois and is bussing employees to Springfield Oct. 22, which may be the next time the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act may be heard on the Illinois House floor.

Groupon is also asking supporters of marriage equality to sign an online petition at IllinoisUnites.org.
